Sourdough Starter Naan Bread

Trim Healthy Mama E

I am so excited to officially share this recipe with you. It’s beyond delicious and it’s so quick to make. Try it just once and you will be hooked just as we are here, even the littles like it.

We have all been on a sourdough kick lately. Some of us are more successful than others (I fall under the ‘other’ category). My sourdough bread might not turn out beautifully but I definitely have a decent understanding of the starter, how to feed it and knowing when it’s happy.

Owning and taking care of a starter is like having a 5th child, I already have 4 children. Since I spend so much time tending to the starter I named him Bobby. Bobby spends most of his time in the refrigerator, if I’m making bread I usually plan ahead and take him out the day before. He gets fed before I go to bed and a couple times the following day. When he looks happy (bubbling) he’s ready to be used.

If you are not sure if your starter is active enough/ready to be used you can do the float test: fill a cup with lukewarm water and drop a small spoonful of starter, if it floats it’s good to go but if it sinks it needs to be feed again. Once fed and doubled in size repeat the float test again in several hours.

For this particular recipe your starter does NOT have to be ‘active’ nor does it have to be recently fed, this recipe is great for using up discarded starter (the portion of your sourdough starter that you get rid of when you do a feeding). Or, if you are like me you continue to feed the starter for this particular recipe. I wish I could give you some decent advice on how to best store the naan bread and how long it lasts but I can’t – my husband and I usually fight for the last piece EVERY SINGLE TIME, I have never had any left over.

You can make the naan bread at big or as little as you want. I’ve made it on the bigger side to use as a wrap and I’ve also made small ones – these are great for dipping either in garlic oil or artichoke dip.

We are obsessed with this sourdough starter naan bread – OBSESSED!!! Like I already mentioned, half the time Bobby gets feed it’s for this particular recipe. In the last 3 days I’ve made this recipe at least 7 times. IT’S THAT GOOD!

This recipe yields 3 decent size servings.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sourdough starter
  • 3 tsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper, freshly ground
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 3 tsp oil, divided

Instructions

1. Heat oil in a medium size pan on medium heat. Once the oil is hot add 1/3 cup of the sourdough starter in the pan, using two spatulas spread the starter into a circle.

2. Season the starter with 1/2 tsp nutritional yeast, dash of salt, pepper and garlic. Flip and do the same on the other side. You might need to flip it once more to make sure it has cooked through, 2-3 minutes of each side until golden brown. Repeat with remaining starter.

We love the naan bread as a side in a salad – our favorite is the Caesar salad, soup or as sandwich bread. If you want to use it as a wrap add more starter to the pan. However you make it or whatever seasonings you add – you will LOVE it! It’s so delicious and quick to make.

  1. Do you have a recipe for the sourdough starter you use? I’ve tried several and just can’t get it to go. I’d like to use fresh milled wheat flour, if that’s possible. Any suggestions or recipes? Thanks!

  2. 5 stars

I do something similar except I add green onions (or fresh chives) and everything bagel seasoning. 🙂

      1. I made this recipe recently and it was gummy on inside after cooking several minutes on each side. I would love to try again. Any suggestions for next time?

        1. Hi Lesley, thank you for your question. The only thing I can think of is try spreading the starter out a bit more in the middle but to be honest I think my stays a bit gummy too
