Lazy Cabbage Rolls

Trim Healthy Mama – Cross Over

I love cabbage rolls and being Ukrainian I should know how to make them but I do not. The reason I never learned to make them is because they are very time consuming. I decided to create this recipe with all the original ingredients and delicious flavors but with a fraction of the work.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups cabbage, finely shredded
  • 5 cups brown rice, cooked (1.5 cups uncooked)
  • 1.5lbs extra lean ground beef
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 3 egg whites, slightly beaten
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 large carrot, finely grated
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup water (plus more for steaming cabbage)
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 2 tbsp parsley

1. Place the cabbage in a large bowl and cover with boiling water for 10-15 minutes while preparing everything else, this will soften the cabbage. Drain and squeeze excess water with your hands.

2. In a medium size pan saute onions and carrots in butter, once the butter cooks off add 1/4 of water until tender. Stir occasionally to prevent the veggies from burning.

3. In a large mixing bowl combine all of the ingredients, mixing really well. I used a plastic glove and it worked great. You want to make sure all of the spices are incorporated evenly into the mixture.

4. Form patties: I used an ice cream scoop to make sure they were all about the same size. Then formed patties using your hands. With a back of a spoon flatten each patty.

Ingredients for Sauce

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup marinara sauce (White Linen)

Instructions

1. In a medium size bowl add the marina sauce and heavy cream and mix well. Top each patty, about 1 tbsp per patty.

6. Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes or until the ground beef is fully cooked.

Enjoy!

  1. This sounds and looks delicious. The end result picture looks like you put them in a green pepper but I don’t see green pepper in the recipe.

    1. Hi. Thank you for your question. Every time I make them I do something different. But normally they are done without the peppers. If you do have peppers slice them in two clean them out and stuff them with filling. I hope you like this recipe.
