Fall-Off-the-Bone Instant Pot Ribs

Trim Healthy Mama S / Low Carb

Disclaimer: I would like to apologize for the photos, the ribs are a little more “finished’ than what I would have liked and I normally wouldn’t post such photos but this recipe was highly requested since I made them over on Instagram and I didn’t want to keep you all waiting. Next time I make them again I will update the photos.

When we go out to eat with the family there are two meals that I have a really hard time ordering – actually I refuse to order, they are ribs and Caesar salad.

These ribs are so spot on that I refuse to pay $30 for a meal at a restaurant when at home I can make 3 racks of ribs for under that.

The meat is tender, full of flavor and the bones slide right out. This is the easiest recipe that you will make when it comes to ribs.

My aunt makes really delicious ribs but her recipe takes 6 hours in the oven – different temperatures, keeping an eye on the liquid level, washing and so on, it’s very time consuming.

This recipe is really quick – while the ribs are in the Instant Pot I make the barbecue sauce and the glaze.

Lets Talk About the BBQ sauce and the Honey Glaze

BBQ Sauce: You can use any flavor BBQ sauce, our absolute favorite is Sweet Baby Ray’s. Since that BBQ sauce is not on plan I make my own. This last time I made ribs I used my sauce and the kids didn’t notice a difference.

When making the barbecue sauce use a brand of ketchup that fits into your eating plan (sugar free, low sugar, sweetened with honey).

Honey Glaze: The honey glaze is optional but highly recommended if it fits into your eating plan.

When it comes to broiling the ribs KNOW YOUR OVEN WELL or you will end up with ribs looking like mine. Everything was going well until the second layer of BBQ sauce and I left them under the broiler for 2 minutes longer and from there they kept getting more and more finished, which we don’t mind but they just don’t photograph as well.

Tips

Once I take the ribs out of the Instant Pot I place them, meat side down, on a parchment lined baking sheet. Spread a thin layer of BBQ sauce and broil for several minutes, I know my oven really well and 7 minutes is just the right amount of time. You will be putting the ribs under the broiler for a total of 5 times, once meat side down, flip, BBQ sauce, broil, more BBQ sauce, broil, Honey Glaze, broil, Honey Glaze and a final broil. Be very carefully flipping the ribs they are very tender and the bones will slide right out. Keep and eye on the ribs every time the pan goes under the broiler.

Ingredients for the Ribs

  • 3 racks Baby Back Pork Ribs
  • 5-6 tbsp Montreal Steak Seasoning
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp liquid smoke

Instructions for the Ribs

1. Rinse the ribs and season them on both sides with Montreal Steak Seasoning. Place the ribs in a large bowl, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

2. Add 1 cup of water and 1 tbsp liquid smoke to the Instant Pot and insert the trivet (rack). Place the ribs inside the pot, wrapping each rack around the inside of the pot.

3. Cover and seal the Instant Pot. Cook on high (manual) pressure for 35 minutes. Allow the pressure to release 15 minutes, vent to release the remaining pressure. You will know it’s released when the pin drops.

4. Transfer the cooked ribs onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet, meat side down. Spread a thin layer of BBQ sauce and broil for several minutes.

5. Carefully flip the ribs and spread BBQ sauce, broil for several minutes, spread more BBQ sauce and broil again.

6. Spread half of the Honey Glaze over the ribs and broil for several minutes, you will do this twice.

This was the third recipe I tried for instant pot ribs and its finally the keeper!! I too used a bbq with sugar for the rest of my family and some friends that came over and used a different on plan sauce for myself, but I went ahead with a crossover and did the honey butter glaze on all of them and they knocked it out of the park! Thank you for a spectacular recipe!

    1. Hi Misty. I am so glad you love the ribs as much as we do. That honey butter glaze is my favorite. Once I take the ribs off the pan I scrap all that goodness and eat it. It’s so good!

I made this tonight and it was a hit! It’s super easy. The sauce was excellent. I used beef ribs and the advice to add on extra time, 5 min, was good.
